What Is Cotton Fabric?

Known as the most popular material in the world, cotton is a light, soft natural fabric.

The fluffy fiber is extracted from the seeds of the cotton plant in a process called ginning. The fiber is then spun into cloth, where it can be woven or knit.

The four domesticated species of cotton include:

  • Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum)
  • Egyptian cotton (Gossypium barbadense)
  • Tree cotton (Gossypium arboretum)
  • Levant cotton (Gossypium herbaceum)

Cotton is known for its versatility, performance and natural comfort. Cotton's strength and absorbency makes it an ideal fabric to make clothes and homewares, and industrial products like tarpaulins, tents, hotel sheets, army uniforms, and even astronauts' clothing choices when inside a space shuttle.

The three main types of fabric are natural fibers (such as cotton, wool, and silk), synthetic fibers (like polyester, nylon, and acrylic), and blended fibers, which combine both natural and synthetic materials

Cotton fabric is an all round favourite - a natural, comfortable and breathable fabric which is easy to sew with. This versatile fabric is great for craft projects, quilting and making a wide range of garments such as dresses, shirts, blouses, trousers, skirts and much more!

Pima cotton and Egyptian cotton are often considered to be the most luxurious as they produce the longest fibres. Long cotton fibres means a softer and stronger cotton fabric. Each of the different types of cotton that are grown for use today have their own unique characteristics.

Cashmere is one of the softest fabrics available because it's made of fine wool fibers. Fleece is also soft and lightweight, but not as warm as cashmere. Bamboo blended with cotton or silk can be softer than pure cotton or silk, and it's more sustainable too.
